The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien – Review

I have had so many people tell me to READ this book. (The Hobbit Or There And Back Again) And finally, I have! 🙂 Here are my thoughts on it!!

Isn't this cover amazing?!

“If you care for journeys there and back, out of the comfortable Western world, over the edge of the Wild, and home again, and can take an interest in a humble hero (blessed with a little wisdom and a little courage and considerable good luck), here is a record of such a journey and such a traveler. The period is the ancient time between the age of Faerie and the dominion of men, when the famous forest of Mirkwood was still standing, and the mountains were full of danger. In following the path of this humble adventurer, you will learn by the way (as he did) — if you do not already know all about these things — much about trolls, goblins, dwarves, and elves, and get some glimpses into the history and politics of a neglected but important period. For Mr. Bilbo Baggins visited various notable persons; conversed with the dragon, Smaug the Magnificent; and was present, rather unwillingly, at the Battle of the Five Armies. This is all the more remarkable, since he was a hobbit. Hobbits have hitherto been passed over in history and legend, perhaps because they as a rule preferred comfort to excitement. But this account, based on his personal memoirs, of the one exciting year in the otherwise quiet life of Mr. Baggins will give you a fair idea of the estimable people now (it is said) becoming rather rare. They do not like noise.”

^^Tolkien's original description of The Hobbit^^

Bilbo Baggins is a Hobbit, and the MC of the story. He was probably my favorite character for many different reasons =) For one I found him perfectly adorable! He’s so teeny and he would get frustrated when he couldn’t do things, or reach things and he always needed assistance! I just imagined this little three-foot Hobbit pouting because he was too small to climb trees and reach the top shelves in his Hobbit-hole! XD (It reminded me of myself trying to get the cereal box out of the cupboard…I can never reach and have to ask my brother or drag a chair over to climb on…)

I also loved how he kept the Dwarves in their place! Whenever they would start to complain he would tell them if anyone should be complaining it should be him, and that would shut them right up!
I thought the dwarves were quite entertaining, always arguing like little children and Gandalf always trying to keep track of them all. Fili and Kili were 2 of my favorite Dwarves! I also liked Balin, since he was kind to Bilbo the most =)

^^ The Dwarves ^^

Though there are some scary and graphic parts I didn’t think it was overkill. One of my favorite scenes was when we meet Gollum, even though it was quite terrifying I liked it =D

So much went on in this book, but it felt like Tolkien knew exactly where he was taking it, everything was so full of wonderful detail and you learn so much history (Fictional history) throughout the pages!
I really love Tolkien’s writing style! (It reminded me of Lemony Snicket’s writing but less dark) Its witty and whimsical and so enjoyable to read! He did an exceptional job! Cheers to J.R.R Tolkien! =)

Gahh guys I just loved this book!!
